Angelo Gomez Named Interim Executive Director CRTC

Dear Colleagues,

I’m writing to provide a three-part update on Western’s search for a new Executive Director of the Office of Civil Rights and Title IX Compliance. 

After a national search we invited two finalist candidates to visit campus in November for socially distanced interviews.  Unfortunately, neither of those candidates was ultimately a match for Western’s needs in that position.  Because this role is so crucial to achieving our aspirations with respect to equity and inclusion, we are committed to taking the time to find the right leader.  The search will continue, and our expectation is to make a permanent hire around the end of the academic year.

Vice President Melynda Huskey has been serving as interim Executive Director of OCR/Title IX on top of many other unexpected responsibilities, including leadership of the Incident Command System team during the first critical months of the shift to remote operations due to COVID.  I deeply appreciate her willingness to serve as Executive Director and thank her for excellent leadership of the office.  I also appreciate the time this has taken away from attending to the very important core responsibilities of leading Enrollment and Student Services.

Therefore, until a permanent hire can be made at the end of the academic year, I have asked Angelo Gomez to serve as interim Executive Director.  Mr. Gomez has a legal background and served as Executive Director of the Office of Equity and Inclusion at Oregon State University for more than 15 years.  I am confident that his experience and expertise will serve Western well over the next six months, and grateful for his willingness to step into the role.  Until he is assigned his WWU email Angelo can be contacted at CRTC@wwu.edu. 

Finally, I would like to thank members of the Executive Director search committee for their work over the past several months and their commitment to continue serving as we identify permanent leadership for the Office of Civil Rights and Title IX Compliance.
